You have a trial version? Have you activated it?

The status bar message you're seeing could be because you've Grouped
selected text (select the problem text, and click Group - Ungroup in the
Developer tab to see if this is the problem). However, this would not
affect the Popular option. I don't know if an unactivated/expired copy of
Word produces the same status bar message, but my guess would be that you
need to activate Word or that a trial copy of Word has expired.
