I get this error when I try to change some part of a record in an old version
of access now running on the newest version of the software...

Can some one advise ?

Sorry, motorsport, my telepathy isn't working very well. What versions? What
is the query? Please open the query in SQL view and post it here.

My *guess based on insufficient information* is that you are joining two or
more tables on a field or fields which do not have a relationship defined in
the Relationships window. A97 and earlier would sometimes let you get away
with this but later versions are stricter.
