The ubiquitous slow navigation in Open or Save As Dialogs

As with many users, I have experienced the same problem with the Save As and
Open dialogs operating at glacial speeds when there is a disconnected network
drive mapped. However, nobody has addressed the issue of why. Why does this
only affect Microsoft Office apps and nothing else? I assume MS will claim
that this is a "feature" but does anyone have a clue as to why?

The difference in bahavior is probably due to the fact the Office programs
use their own Open/Save dialog instead of the standard Windows dialog.
The Office dialog design evidently doesn't cope with disconnected network
drives as well as the Windows design does.
