Hi James,

Check the settings under Scaling on the Page tab and see if he
doesn't have some number in there causing the problem.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I am having the same exact issue...let me expand further and excuse the
detail but just so anyone is aware most of the recommendations have been
covered:

Cause: For some reason I can't determine, any project file created
becomes "corrupted" after what I suspect is the initial autosave.

Issue:
When you try to preview a print, it brings up an error message "You
cannot print or preview because the print area of the page is too
small...Try the following: Decrease the page margin, Decrease the
scaling percentage". (Pic 1)

When one clicks Page Setup, there is no ability to change the scaling
and the first page number shows up as "0". (Pic 2)

Also, the ability to open the other tabs such as Margin, Header, Footer
are gone and another error message comes up "The Value Must Be Between
10 and 500". (Pic 3)

With the inability to change the scaling, it is impossible to set the
value between 10 and 500.

I was however able to access the margin, headers, footer tabs through
View on the main toolbar. The margins are showing up as an astonishing
6619 inch all round except the Right margin which is at 6357 in. (Pic
4)

On reducing these to 0.5 inch, I can click on the Page tab that now
allows for adjustment of the scaling however with the same result saying
"The Value Must Be Between 10 and 500" even though an adjustment was
made as such.

P.S. I have done a detect and repair and the issue persists.

Basically, I am currently getting around this problem by creating new
files and pdf-ing them immediately but cannot re-utilize any saved
native files.

Any help/suggestions you or anyone can provide is very much welcome.

Hello Jigzzzz,

Thanks for the details. The only picture which shows in the
attachment shows the scaling at zero and it appears as though it is
available to change.
The other pictures you reference aren't in the attachment.

Your comment about corruption and autosave is interesting. Are you
saving to a network drive? Does the same occur if you save the file
to your local machine? What version (including service pack) are
you running?

JulieS,

Thanks for the prompt feedback...I'm saving on a local hard drive an
not a network.

The picture you are referring to is my "pic 5" showing the page ta
after I use the run-around method from View > Headers & Footers t
access and adjust the Margins to 0.5 inch and access the tab (This i
the part in my documentary before the P.S. comment in my initia
response).

As I indicated then and as you've rightly pointed out, the page scalin
can be adjusted at this point however any adjustment brings the sam
error message "The Value Must Be between 10 and 500" regardless o
whether the value is between or outside 10 and 500.

Odd that you can't see the other pics...I see them on the thread...an
I can't re-upload them per the thread constraints.

I am running MS Project Standard 2003 SP3 (see attached Pic 6 ) o
XP...I had also actually tried re-updating all the service packs an
patches just incase with no luck.

I figure the file becomes "corrupted" during auto-save or sometim
during re-opening the file because I have no issues with printing
previewing prints etc. at least the first couple of minutes the file i
created and open (my auto-save is at 20 mins)...however once the file i
left open for an extended time or saved and re-opened like an hou
later, these issues develop.

Now that I've talked through the issue, I'm going to try removin
auto-save option to see if that works...

Any other suggestions you have are very much welcome!

Thanks

Hi Jigzzzzz,

I think turning off autosave is a good start. I personally do not
use Autosave in Project 2003 due to the limitation of one level of
undo. Let us know how things go with autosave turned off.

Looks like it worked...Just tried to open a file saved earlier in th
day after turning off auto-save and at this point usually would hav
been "corrupted" and it had no issues (Fingers crossed).

I recollect turning on the auto-save now a few weeks back to avoi
losing work-in-progress but still would not have expected that to affec
the file.

Oh well...Will update if the issue springs up again.

Thanks...J

I am experiencing the EXACT same problem as described by Jigzzzzz. I went
and checked to see if the auto save was on and it is not. Before September
21st I had no problem printing ..... any other suggestions on how I can
correct this?

Thanks!!

Hello llchevy56,

Have you tried repairing the file through the suggestions on FAQ #43
at:
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm ?

The fact that this is a sudden change leads me to believe your
project file may be mildly corrupted.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie - I'll give that a try. I may or may not be able to do that because
of the setup at work. I could try at home but I have the 2003 version and
only the 2000 at work (without disks I might add).

One thing I was able to do was to switch to Gantt Tracking it would print.
Thought maybe it would help with the regluar Gantt Chart so switched back but
it still would not work.

Be interested to know if this gets figured out, first time I have
encountered it since I have been working with Project in the last 5 or 6
years.

Hi,

You shouldn't require the setup disks -- make a copy of the Project
file and try the options (not the XML) to repair the corruption. It
sounds as if the Gantt chart view has somehow become corrupted, so
possibly a quick fix may work.

Let us know how you get along.
