there are bullets in my captions - ??

I just got a job at a company that is unfortunately still using Windows XP and Word 2003. Today when trying to insert a table caption in a document, a bullet is inserted in front of the caption (*Table 1).
Try as I may to modify the caption style, I can't get back to the good old default that I am used to. I can see that the caption style says that it is bulleted, but when I try to change it to numbered, it starts at zero!
I just want the default caption style to work, I don't want to reset the entire gallery of styles - help??

I have not messed with ANY numbering or bullets in this document. I am having to re-learn (or is that de-learn?) Word all over again now that I have stepped back into XP.

thanks for any insight,
Terry

If you are using the Insert | Reference | Caption feature, the Caption style
should be unnumbered. Clear any numbers or bullets from the style, using the
Modify Style dialog box.

OK, of course I didn't think of anything that simple. Thanks, I'm all
set now (and happy!)
