There is a table named [custom table] in this project which cannot be overwritten

Hall

In Project Pro, I created a custom view that refers to fields in a custom tablein enterprise global. No problem.

I then created a new project and added data to fields in the custom table, and the custom view is what it was saved with. No problem.

I then saved it as a file. Then I opened Project Pro again and loaded the project into Project Server. Then closed Project Pro. No problem.

Then I tried to open the project in Project Pro and got this message:
There is a table named [custom table name] in this project which cannot be overwritten.
Press OK to rename it, or press Cancel to cancel opening the project.
How do I avoid this?

Dale, not exactly. The message I'm getting is a custom table which was previously loaded into enterprise global to support a custom view also in enterprise global. If I delete the custom table, doesn't the view fall apart?

Is this happening because I have conflict between the tables available in the plan and the tables available in enterprise global? Should I be saving my plans differently? I'm confused about this.

Thx so much

Sorry. I think I misunderstood you problem. Do not delete either the custom View or the custom Table from the Enteprise Global. The issue that you are experiencing is how Project Server enforces the enterprise environment for all Microsoft Project users, and the warning message is part of the enforcement procedure. It guarantees that enterprise features, such as Views and Tables, always supercede local features that are named the same.

Simply tell your people that if they see this warning message, to click the OK button. The issue turns into a problem when people are seeing warnings about renaming or replacing either the Gantt Chart or Entry table, which is not your situation. Sorry for leading you astray, at least at first. Hope this clarification helps.

If they hit OK, then they'll be prompted to rename the custom table and custom view. If they don't hit OK and hit Cancel instead, they'll not be able to open the project. Do I want them to rename the custom table and view?

Hall -

Yes, tell your people to click the OK button and to rename the table. This will cause no problems. Each time your people log into Project Server in Microsoft Project 2002, the Enterprise Global features and the local Global.mpt features are merged together into a single cached global file. Thus, each time they log in, they are getting the latest version of the custom Table and View you created for them. Don't worry. It will work as intended. The warning message just "freaks out" people a lot of the time. Good luck!

What exactly did you do? If you didn't use the Import Wizard, you should
have.

Gary, you're saying I should only import a project file using the Import
Wizard?

How is that different from "Open from file"->"Save As"...save to Project
Server with type "Project"? That's what I've been doing and if that causes
problems, we really need to understand that!

If it exists as a file, best practice is to use the Import Project Wizard.
