There seems to be 2 versions of the Picture Tools Format Ribbon

I am teaching Word 2007 for the first time. Throughout my classroom (30
stations), students will INSERT PICTURE and choose the same JPG file. Some of
the document windows show the Picture Tools Format Ribbon as expected. Others
show a different Ribbon (still labeled Picture Tools Format) but the Picture
Styles Group does NOT show. (Adjust, Shadow Effects, Border, Arrange, and
Size are the only groups showing.

Hi Pam,

The tools are contextual based on the File Format or compatibility settings you're using.

Working on a .DOC (Word97-2003) file, or a .docX file that maintains compatibility with Word 97-2003 will use the Tools without
Picture Styles and using Insert=>SmartArt will bring up the prior version 'Diagrams' choices rather than the new SmartArt gallery.

To check to see if you're in compatibility mode you can look for a 'Convert' choice by clicking the 'Office button' or hover the
mouse over the current, open document icon on the Windows taskbar and look for the 'compatibility mode' wording.

That was IT!! Thanks, Bob! My students are coming and going between 2003 and
2007 and I had not noticed they were working in "Compatibility" mode.

The biggest challenge in teaching a new version is NOT the teaching of it.
It is the FIXING of all the things students DO while they are learning! I
will be visiting you often, I am sure. Thanks, again!

Bob
great to find a discussion on this subject...

I am having the same problem and it's driving me nuts. I am working in word
2007 Inserting JPEG files into a document. Apparently identical files can
call up different menus when you click on the picture tools format tab. I
can insert five pictures and format them with a fuzzy drop shadow, then the
sixth picture opens up the format menu without the picture styles option.

Please help....
