things I don't like about Word 2007

After one day.

(1) The QAT is too small -- is there a way to make the icons bigger?

I'd like to put Insert Cross Reference and Insert Caption buttons on
it, but they don't seem to be in the "All Commands" list -- OTOH, I
haven't tried to insert a cross reference or a caption yet, so I don't
know if/how they've been repackaged.

(2) It was silly to rename the Edit menu "Home"!

(3) And this is an actual problem. The first three items I put into my
bibliography Source File (or whatever it's called) are books in
series, and there's no provision for including a series in the form.
It looks like I might have to try to figure out SML, or whatever Yves
= P0 was talking about, code long, long, long before I expected to
need to.

That's all. What's everyone complaining about?

1. There's no way (other than changing screen resolution) to make the QAT
icons larger, but you can allow the QAT more real estate by putting it below
the ribbon.

2. The UI team wanted to have one tab that was standard across all
applications. If you read Jensen Harris's blog, you'll see how they agonized
over the name for it. They named it Home because it's the one that contains
the most-used commands that you ultimately come back to.

3. No answer.

I need a different video card. The one I got can't handle my 1400 x
900 monitor.

It squanders years of users' experience with Word for the sake of a pretty
and inefficient interface that is not easily customisable. Functions that
users have complained about for years (eg Master Documents) still don't
work. The learning curve for experienced Word users is steep which imposes a
heavy training burden on business. It's a really good business plan to piss
off your core customer base.

You can't blame Word for that :)

Hi Peter,

So does this mean you haven't found anything you like yet in Word 2007? :)

To add and item from the Ribbon (such as Cross References) to the Quick Access Toolbar you can do it from the Ribbon.

Try, Reference=>Captions, right click on the 'Cross Reference' choice and choose 'Add to Quick Access Toolbar'. (You can add an
entire group, such as Captions, as well by right clicking on the group [i.e. Captions] title).

The Edit menu was not renamed as Home tab. The Home tab is the 'go to' choice and combines features from the Standard and
Formatting toolbars. The Ribbon can be customized and there can even be items to the left of the 'Home' tab. For example, click on
the 'Outline' view choice on the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

For References=>Manage Sources, when you say 'books in series' are you referring to multiple volumes/articles by the same author(s)
or...?

Hi Peter,

So does this mean you haven't found anything you like yet in Word 2007? :)

What's not to like? It's no different from 2003, except for the silly
new names that make it hard to find stuff. If the Bibliography thing
worked better, it would be really good. Why didn't they just buy out
EndNote and incorporate it? (Not that I know that EndNote is as good
as Papyrus was, but it's the standard.)
To add and item from the Ribbon (such as Cross References) to the Quick Access Toolbar you can do it from the Ribbon.

See now that's the basic problem with "Help" thingies. I tried right-
clicking on the Ribbon and it didn't offer "Customize." So why would i
suppose I could customize it, so why would I even look in "Help"?
Try,  Reference=>Captions, right click on the 'Cross Reference' choice and choose 'Add to Quick Access Toolbar'. (You can add an
entire group, such as Captions, as well by right clicking on the group [i..e. Captions] title).

Thanks! I'll do that for the handful of things I use. (Can items be
_removed_ from the Ribbon? I have no use whatsoever for the Mailing
tab.)
The Edit menu was not renamed as Home tab.  The Home tab is the 'go to'choice and combines features from the Standard and
Formatting toolbars.

Well, I had pretty much combined those two into one toolbar ... there
was no way of guessing which button would be on which of those two.
The Ribbon can be customized

But how?? (You may give page refs. to Step by Step, Inside Out, or
Advanced Docuiments. [Two of them from an online deep discounter, the
first courtesy of a big Borders coupon.])
and there can even be items to the left of the 'Home' tab. For example, click on
the 'Outline' view choice on the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

For References=>Manage Sources, when you say 'books in series' are you referring to multiple volumes/articles by the same author(s)
or...?

For instance, the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Rome) publishes a
supremely useful series known as Analecta Orientalia that includes
(among other things) grammars of most of the important languages of
the ancient Near East, and many libraries order and store series of
books as units, not cataloguing and shelving them separately.
Therefore the reader needs to know that a book is in a series.

(Series information must be included in a Chicago-style bibliography
entry, so it's astonishing that there's no provision for it.

Also, if the "preview" is an accurate indication of what will be
inserted into my text when I tell it to Add Bibliography, then it has
a major problem: it treats "section of a book" as if the chapter title
were the book title, and doesn't include the book title at all!)
