This action is only valid for products that are currently installe

My PC at work had network installed MS Office 2000. Recently I deinstalled
it and reinstalled MS Office 2000 using my own MS Office installation CD
disks (my user account has admin right locally). Since then everything has
been working OK except for one thing: whenever I right click an unknown file
to invoke "open with" Excel, Word etc...., the computer does not have the
correct path leading to the intended program (Excel, Word etc....), giving
error message "This action is only valid for products that are currently
installed". The only way I could open such a file is by opening it under
Excel with Excel already up and running. Is there an easy way for me to
resurrect "OPEN WITH" with regard to Word, Excel... ? Thanks so much for any
input you may may.

Try a check. In Folder Options, File Type tab select the XLS extension. At
the bottom select Advanced and then Edit. Does the path match your current
installed path for Office or the network installed path?

Thanks Don. The path corresponds to the old Network installation. I tried to
change the path to the current location of Excel program. But the "OPEN WITH"
still gives me the same message "This action is only valid for products that
are currently inst...".
thanks, C.C.

Likely the old path occurs in a number of places just for *.xls {for each
action that can be taken} and for the other Office related extensions. Not
sure what to do, perhaps others have some better ideas. The only one I have
is {if you have not done so} to run a repair installation.

I guess I will just save as many files as possible uninstall then reinstall. I think that is the best I can do from what you have said. Thank you all. Bleary
