it might be worth renaming this group to something like
'microsoft.public.access_database' to make it clearer that it is not a
microsoft 'public access' group. that seems to be what lots of the very off
topic posters seem to think, that this group is just a public group to
access microsoft.

It's been discussed... but changing a newsgroup name, particularly a
busy newsgroup like this, is a real nightmare. Tens of thousands of
news servers all over the world have microsoft.public.access defined
as a legitimate group; it will live on for years even if Microsoft
removes it from the Microsoft server. In addition, the link is
undoubtedly hardcoded in millions of computers, and changing the name
would break the link.

I fear that though it would be a good idea it's not going to happen!

before m.p.access and that will attract newbies like honey.

And here an even better idea: adding *many* new newsgroups before
m.p.access; the natural selection will work and only the most fitted will
survive until m.p.access.

Funny thing is, about 3 years ago this newsgroup was *very* inactive,
only about 30 posts per week, and was almost the lowest volume Access
newsgroup.

It isn't a nightmare. It is impossible. You can't rename a newsgroup. You
can delete a newsgroup and create a new one (in either order.)

It seems to me that, at that time, Microsoft had dropped the newsgroup
completely, and it only lived on in other servers that perpetuated it.
Microsoft reinstated it as an "official" MS newsgroup, I think, because
too many people were getting irate that their posts to this officially
dead newsgroup weren't getting answers, while other conscientious people
felt obliged to read and post answers to the group because of that.
