This has to have a work around - tables

D

The mission ... update table contents with new info. That new info is
sent/received in a number of tables in a word document.

I simply want to copy some of the table columns into my existing table in
Frontpage. The layout is similar, so I did a few things to the layout of
the received table make it totally compatable with the existing table in the
site.

Now ... when I try to past the new content into the pre-existing site, it
all pastes into 1 cell and it's making me crazy. It behaves as a nested
table and I don't want that. How do I beat that. I just want the contents
to populate the cells in the existing table. I don't even mind having to
reformat the content, but I certainly am not interested in retyping it.

Is there some well-kept secret about overcoming or working around this. I'm
not being very successuflk ==,, that I don't know about,

Here are three things to try.

First alternative, try to copy just the text out of Word,
and not the whole cell. That is, at the time you issue
the Copy command, the space between the text and the cell
border is white.

Second alternative, after you paste into FrontPage, look
for a Paste Options button at the lower right corner of
the pasted content. If it appears, click its dropdown
arrow and choose Keep Text Only.

Third (and old reliable)
Copy the revised text out of Word.
Paste it into Notepad.
Copy the revised text out of Notepad.
Paste it into FrontPage.

Save or export the page from Word as HTML, then import the file into FP, then copy and paste the
rows/cells from that page into your current table.

Ok ... now I'm going crazy. I saved the word file as an html.
I open frontpage and open the website that I plan to add the file contents
to. I then try to open that file and it won't open in frontpage ... it
opens in word. arghhhhhhhh!!!. I'll try opening with frontpage instead of
double-clicking which as worked for other files. (also .. maybe my file
associations are doing something wierd).

By the way ... the only way I was able to overcome the nesting, was to copy
the text one cell at a time ... there were hundreds of cells. Even when I
told it to paste an entire column - as unformated text - it then pasted all
of the text into one cell, instead of in rows. I tried all kinds of
combinations. There has to be a way around this without it being such an
onerous task.

Well ... I figured it out ... finally.

I did the next best thing to your suggestions and what I'd already done: I
copied the entire table into FP ... however, I pasted to a new, blank page -
at least that made sure it was in html. I then added the spacer columns
(left and right) of the table and copy/pasted the entire table into the web
page where I wanted the info. Unfortuantely it didn't populate existing
cells, but it did place them ... where I wanted them ... and that's
acceptable. In other Office components, when you highlight the cells to be
replaced, they really "do" get replaced, however, in FP, they are added.
For now, I'll take that!

Thanks Thomas and Jim for your suggestions.

You have the FP options set to "Open Office files with the program that
created it" or words to that effect -- find that option and turn it off.

David,
It took a while to find, but I did indeed find it.
Tools|options|configure editors|
At the bottom of this window is a checkbox for "open web pages in the Office
application that create them".. I unselected it.
Thank you soooo much.
