"this item could not be saved because it has been changed" error m

Ed Gogol

Am using Office Basic 03, updated to Office SP 2.
In Outlook, I create a new contact, enter some info, click on Save or do
Ctrl-S, enter some more info, do Ctrl-S again. The following message comes
up:
"This item could not be saved because it has been changed by another user or
in another window. Do you want to make a copy in the default folder for the
item?"
I click Yes, and it saves a second copy of the same item, this time with the
changes.
Am working in a non-networked, stand-alone environment.
Only place I could find any info about this message in the Knowledge base is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883915/en-us, about a post SP-1 hotfix dated
9/9/04. But I installed SP 2 and the problem still exists. Should I install
this hotfix? Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

Obviously, the hotfix only applies to users in an Exchange environment, so
no, you should not apply it.

I would suggest posting a more clear and detailed description of the steps
to repro the error message, including whether Outlook ever worked as it
should and if so the steps you that broke it. Pay particular attention to
the transports and information store you use.

Thanks, Russ.
To explain exactly how I make the problem appear:
Click on New button in toolbar.
Type name, for example, “Jane Smithâ€, press Ctrl-S.
Type some more info, for example “himom†in the memo field.
Press Ctrl-S again, dialog box pops up.

Am running Office Outlook 03 SP2, part of Office Basic 03. OEM from Dell.
Fully updated, Office Update reports no further udpates needed.
Data is stored in the single “Personal Folders†file.
When I look at Personal Folders properties, I see “Automatically generate
Microsoft Exchange†views†is checked, but that’s the only possible thing
relevant that I see.

Thanks for any further assistance you can offer.

We're not any closer. The "New" button is different for each folder. You
never mentioned what folder you are in.
Explain why you would press Control-S after each element you enter instead
of just saving the Contact Record when you are finished entering all the
information in the Contact record

Sorry. I'm in the Contacts folder when I press New, to create a new contact.
And I'm saving multiple times just because I tend to be compulsive about
saving -- I enter some critical data, save it, enter some more, save it again.
I've been having the problem for some months but just today am moved to try
to find out solution. can't remember if it was there from the start or not,
but I don't think so.

I cannot reproduce this behavior nor have I seen it reported.
Have you tried any routine maintenance like repairing your PST file or
creating a new profile?
