As you have given us such a lot to go on, we can only surmise (and please
don't type all in caps, it's very rude) that you have a version of Office
that requires activation (2000 with SP1 included, XP or 2003) or that you
are running a trial version and it's expired.

Do this: Open document, Select All, Copy, New Document, Paste.

Bam, you're in business.

I admit it, I stopped reading after the first sentence. Usenet nazis are so
tiresome. However, I believe you can still copy text out of a locked
document or expired trial. If you can't, I guess I've wasted a couple
minutes of my life and maybe a minute of that guy's time...

Whoops, I just realized he won't be able to edit the New Document. My bad.
I'd say get yourself a copy of MSWorks if you can't afford Office.
