this patch could not be opened

In another newsgroup, someone pointed me to this site:

I have not yet tried the registry edit that is suggested there because it
involves deleting a number of "patches". I followed the "Find" procedure
suggested and found seven folders marked "Patches" as opposed to the three
found by the poster. Without a clearer identification of the origin of those
patches, I am nervous about changing the registry.
