Times v's Times Roman

R

RockyRoad

I have used "Times" since the late 1980's as my basic serif font. Now
that "Times Roman" is around and seems more common on PC's should I be
converting over to that as my standard font and forgetting plain "Times"?

PS: they don't really look different to me.

Hi Rocky,

Yes, you should switch. Times New Roman has become the standard and will
afford greater cross-platform compatibility. Also, I believe that of the
two, only Times New Roman has an expanded Unicode character set, which will
make a difference when you upgrade to Word 2004.

Ok Cool. Thanks.

Just another question - can I actually remove the old Times from my
system (10.3.9) and if so, will word default to using Times New Roman
whenever the old Times is called on by older documents?

Related to that, does word choose a similar named font when the
requested font is not installed, or does it go to a general default font?

Thanks for you help.

Yes, you "could" remove it, and yes, *Word* will default.

But some other applications won't, so I would not "remove" Times, I would
simply Add Times New Roman and start using it instead.

Cheers

Rocky,

If you want more information on why Times New Roman is more appropriate in
Word 2004, and some of the ramifications, do a "Find" command for "Times" in
the notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your
Will", which are available as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Bend/BendWord.htm).

BTW, That's the latest edition (18 April 2005) of "Bend Word to Your Will",
which covers many aspects of Word 2004 -- it isn't in any earlier editions.

Thank you. I downloaded it a couple of days ago and will check

PS: There seems to be a disproportionate number of Australians helping

And the only way to keep the Earth in balance considered the
amount of Microsoft sillyness that goes on in the US.

I mean, Microsoft is HQ'ed here!

(And international lawsuits are much more difficult to accomplish :)

But Times New Roman is Word's base font - it won't run properly
without it. You don't have to use it, but you must have it installed.

Absolutely not true. I run for days without Times NR, Arial, and other
standard TrueTypes; Word does not need it at all.

Hello Clive!

The link you posted gets me a "The page cannot be found" error message. I've
tried twice on two different days with same result.

The link somehow picked up the final parentheses. (parens? Parenthese?)
Just delete it from the address bar.
