The business that I am working for is looking into acquiring the services of
Microsoft Project Server 2007 and possibly Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server
2007. My employer currently has Windows Sharepoint Server version 3 but is
wondering if it is worth it to them to upgrade. They have a few questions I
was hoping someone would be able to answer.
1. In Project Server, timesheets can get a bit messy and confusing. Does
2007 offer a timesheet where a user can enter all their hours from multiple
projects into one timesheet or do they still have to fill out separate
timesheets for every project? The following is a quote from my employer as to
their view of how it is set up in 2003: “If a resource is assigned to
multiple tasks in multiple projects, it becomes messy and cumbersome for them
to report time against each task in the Project Server, "view my tasks"
window.â€
2. If question number one’s answer is that they still have to fill out
separate timesheets for every project, is it possible to create your own
unique Excel spreadsheet to import to the library in Sharepoint to do this
and use instead?
3. An example on timesheets:
Say a user worked 10 hours on a task this week. The user goes to Project
server and notes that the “Actual Hours†for the task indicates 15 hours.
The user has to add the new hours, 10, to previous hours, 15, and enter 25
hours in this field. The user has to add the new hours, 10, to previous
hours, 15, and enter 25 hours in this field.
Now this can lead to potential errors on the user’s side and create
problems. Is this the same in the new version?
4. It does not appear that the server allows you to enter a date range for
the “Actual hours†entered, so there is another potential that a resource’s
hours may not be recorded accurately over the time range for the project. My
employer would prefer to have the user enter the number of hours worked for a
given date range and have the system calculate the totals. Is this in
Project Server 2007 or could a spreadsheet be created like I mentioned
before?
I would appreciate any feedback that I can get back as soon as possible.
Thank you!
