Angie,
I'm afraid you are attempting the almost impossible, here's a quote from
Steve Rindsberg I am sure he won't mind my doing so:
Timing
If you plan to create a presentation that's tightly synchronized to a sound
track, stop. Plan something else.
It won't work in PowerPoint. Sorry, that's harsh. But it's kinder to tell
you now than let you spend hours making head-shaped dents in your furniture
and walls.
You can't synch slide shows to sound in any version of PPT. You may be able
to get it fairly close on one particular computer, but the show won't stay
in synch on other computers or probably even the next time you reboot and
play the show again.
If you really really need to do this, the best bet is to break up your sound
track into slide-sized chunks and embed indiviual WAV files on each slide as
transition sounds. This can work quite nicely for spoken narration but
obviously won't work for music tracks.
If you want you can read the whole article about timing and other pitfalls
here:

Perhaps you should convert your presentation into flash or video format. That
is the best way to get the consistency.
For converting into flash, you can try out articulate presenter:

Or you can convert the presentation into video using camtasia:

In addition to the suggestions Luc and tohlz gave, you might check into
VoxProxy. It has some very nice media handling capabilities, and I suspect it
could be used to help synch the slides and the sound. http://www.voxproxy.com

Angie,

As others have pointed out getting PowerPoint to time a slide this way is
all but impossible, so let's approach it from a different way. The music
will always play at a constant rate so it is the given we will work with.

One of the tricks I use to do this is to set the slide transition time to
LESS than it takes to play the music. I then insert a very small object
(box, circle, etc.) and set its properties to transparent with no line. Now
set the object to appear "after previous" with a time of "0" seconds.

The end result is that when the music ends the slide transition will happen
within a fraction of a second.
