tmp files

I thought some .tmp files were duplicates of files created and could be
accessed if needed; for example, if a word document was in process and the
computer restarted - a tmp file was created; however, when we try to open it
there are only numbers. We tried in Notepad as well.

Are these files useless as a means to recover lost info? so what is their
purpose?

The means for recovering a document following a crash is found in the
location pointed to by the Autorecovery entry in Tools, options, Save.
"tmp." files are used by the app during editing of the document only,
and old ones can be deleted.

You can try. You may find you can read it, or it may be badly corrupted
and won't open properly after the "crash" or disconnect, YMMV. Like I
said the "Autorecovery" is the method provided for post crash document
restoration.
