is there any way to easily identify and get rid of
pictures i am not using anymore, such as the ones that are
created by changing interactive button properties and the
table spacer gifs? (everytime i stretch a table i get a
new gif) they all have names something like mfjddr_57.gif.
can i resave my page somewhere else so that it only
resaves the pictures that are actually being used?

Switch to Reports view and display the Unlinked Files
report.

However, be careful what you delete based on this report.
It may not pick up cases where scripts and other subtle
processes make use of a picture or file. Nobody was every
sorry they had a backup.
