TOC doesn't work. it shows the field code, but doesn't update..

I have this document from hell that i didn't design. i have page breaks and
my styles are set up to differentiate the headings for the Table of Contents.
Well when i close my document, (my TOC is in place as i have already
formatted). Upon reopening - my Table of Contents has disappeared along
with my headers and footers. I have replaced the TOC, hdrs and ftrs so often
that i am about to abort...

Anothing peculiar thing is that the info is there, i can preview it up it
doesn't show in my format and it used to...so what's up . i have printed the
document with the field codes and nothing appears amiss..so help what am i
doing wrong...HELP HELP HELP ME if you can....i cannot send the document
out...

If the ToC is showing Field Codes, then go to Tools, Options, View tab and
clear the check box against Field Codes.
