TOC - Formatting lost when doc saved, closed and reopened

I am using Word 2002 and have set up my TOC via styles with the correct tabs
and automatic update switched off and it's perfect - UNTIL - I save and
close the document then reopen it and all the formatting reverts back to
undefined tabs.

Did you select "From template" as the style when you created the TOC? If you
chose one of the other formats (Classic, Distinctive, etc.), you can't save
changes to the TOC entry styles.
