TOC page numbers go funny

B

Bob

I'm working on a long document with a Table of Contents, Table of Figures
and Table of Tables, all made as TOC. When I opened the document recently,
every page number in the TOCs had changed to 3. They returned to the proper
numbers when I used Update Field, but I don't like surprises of that kind.
What might have happened? I could not deliberately make every page number
read as 3 even if I wanted to :)
I'm using W97 and Win XP Pro

Hi Bob,

As long as they update correctly, this is not a problem. Even though it
looks strange, it is almost normal behaviour.

My guess [sometimes guessing is allowed Bill ;-) ] is that when you open
your file, Word has to repaginate it, sometimes, when the repaginating (is
that a word?) takes too long (lots of graphics, tables, fields, etc.?), then
all entries get a low number. IOW, this is as far as Word got repaginating
when you look at the TOC, or when Word internally updated the TOC, the
repaginating was not done yet.

I usually get page #2... I guess your computer is faster and repaginates one
page faster!

Don't worry, it is not a problem, as long as when you update the page
numbers are correct (as I wrote above).
