TOC trouble

I am using Word 2000 and Windows XP. I always setup my Table of Contents as
a separate section with separate Roman page numbering in the footer, and I
make sure that the Same As Previous is turned off properly.

When I update the entire TOC, why does Word sometimes destroy the Section
break, remove the Same as Previous and kill all of the footer page numbering?
Sometimes the TOC gets updated properly and sometimes Word destroys the
Section break between the TOC and the rest of the document.

How do I prevent Word from destroying the Section break?

Make sure you did not put the section break inside the TOC field.
Also make sure there is at least one paragraph (empty or
otherwise) between the TOC field and the section break.

I'll echo garfield-n-odie's suggestion. It is all too easy to get breaks
(page, section, paragraph) inside the TOC field if the field code is not
displayed. Press Alt+F9 to display the field code (which will probably show
the section break inside the field braces). Delete the existing section
break, press Enter after the closing field brace to add an empty paragraph,
and then reinsert the section break after that paragraph.
