TOC with Outline Numbers

I'm sorry for the cross-post, I posted this question in Tables, but I
read I might have a better chance here.

I have created a document in Word 2000 with an outline number scheme
1, 1.1, 1.2, 2, 2.1 etc. Now I want to make a table of contents
including all level 1 and level 2 headings in the TOC. I followed the
directions in the Help exactly for creating a TOC by Using
Outline-styles. I applied a level 1 and level 2 outline style to each
headng. When I click to insert the TOC I get the error message that
no toc entries have been made.

I'm desperate. This doc is overdue.

Suzanne: Thanks for answering.

So, if I made my document with regular, automatically numbered
paragraphs and sub paragraphs, I can't make a table of contents out of
that? Please excuse the rant: It amazes me that with the amount of
money Microsoft has and the number of people it employs that something
as simple as this has to be a huge production. This is a fairly easy
task in Word Perfect. <rant off>. I've read the two documents you've
referenced and they are way too complex for me to attempt when what I
want is such a simple thing. It will be far easier for me just to
type up the TOC. Can I hyperlink my manual TOC to the sections?

You can hyperlink the TOC to the sections, but it would be much easier to
let Word do this for you. If you are unwilling to commit to what is required
to use styles or outline levels, then it would be exactly as much work to
insert TC fields in the headings as to insert hyperlinks in a manual TOC,
and much less work to create the TOC itself.

No, you don't have to modify style headings to accept numbering. You can use
TC fields.

OK, you have thoroughly confused me now.

I have used the standard numbering feature in Word to develop this
doc. Do I or do I not have to convert my document to use heading
styles to generate a TOC?
