toggle total row button greyed out

I've turned on filtering and I need to turn on the total
row that sums the filtered data. For some reason the
option is greyed out. I've used this before when
importing XML data, but never on just a regular
spreadsheet and I'm not sure why I can't toggle
that option.

Thanks for any ideas.

I bet you didn't use Data|Filter to see the subtotals before.

I bet you used Data|Subtotals.

All I did before was import an XML file and it brought up
the LIST tool bar to to that. Upon completion of my
import, the toggle total row button just worked and
if I filtered the data, the totals updated to reflect
only the data I was viewing.

Now I'm trying to get the same functionality by
just opening a spreadsheet a client sent me.
Each row item has a territory ID and a $$ amount,
I want to be able to apply filters to look at different
territory IDs and view the $ totals for that territory.

Ahhh. Data|List, not just Data|autofilter.

I'm not sure how the XML stuff worked, but if your data isn't a list, you can
select your data and then Data|List.

With that List toolbar visible, you can click on the "Toggle total row" icon.
