While using PowerPoint slide show to give a demonstration, how can I toggle
to a different program?

You can either put a button with a hyperlink to another file that opens the
program, or you can Alt-TAB among currently open programs.

Katz,

Press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard
At the same time press the TAB key (next to Q) to show what's running, keep
pressing TAB until you get to the one you want, then let go.

Alternatively, start the other program and have it running. Then press the
"windows" key, to see the taskbar along the bottom, to jump to what you
want.
