Too much automation

I have a column, and in this column I put day, month, and it converts that
to 22-Oct, 25-Oct. Etc.

I decided to break up day and month.
So I inserted a new column.
Now in previous column I just want to put day only.
But when I do this, I enter a 7, for example, up comes 8-Jan. But I just
want to see 7.

What is going on and how do I shut if off-- without affecting the other
great things I like about excel. Thanks.

Change the number format for your "previous column" back to General.

Well I wanted to keep that previous column intact, it has info I still need,
month and day; I wanted to transition it out eventually, but still need it
now.
