Toolbar Settings Changing

R

Rob Taylor

A few days ago I posted a problem that my toolbar
settings had changed, and when I restored them the way I
want them, the next time I opened Outlook they would
change back. I received an answer instructing me to
rename the outcmd file and let Outlook create a new one,
then make the changes again. THAT WORKED. Now, however,
sporadically, when I open Outlook, those settings are
AGAIN changed until I reboot. After that they'll be the
way I set them for a while, then change again and I have
to reboot again. It appears that Outlook has a mind of
its own.

Is there any way to correct this very annoying behavior?

G'Day Rob,

There are three 'configuration' files that MAY become corrupt
with Outlook:
Outcmd.dat
Extend.dat
Frmcache.dat.

Deleting them, and setting up your various preferences again
usually works - and the problem goes away, often for good!

You appear to have something that is exacerbating the situation -
perhaps an AddIn.

Try removing any recent AddIns for (say) two weeks and see
how you go.

You might also consider a "chkdsk C: /f" followed by a defrag
just to be safe.

And to add to what Pat said, once you have recreated your toolbars to your
preference, close Outlook and copy the file outcmd.dat to a safe place. If
you have to rename the file again, you can just copy your saved file back to
the location of the renamed one and you will be back up and running.

Thanks Pat. I did the number on Outcmd.dat, so now I'll
try the other two and do the chkdsk and defrag (although
I defraged the disk less than a month ago and have done
very little data management activity since. Mostly just
email. I haven't installed anything new since I first
got the computer brand new about 6 weeks ago. I did have
to uninstall & reinstall Norton Antivirys and Internet
security.

I'm also experiencing this same behavior on my laptop,
which is also running WinXP Pro.

Good'OnYa Rob,

These are common problems, but should NOT persist.
See also what Milly says - keep a copy of OUTCMD.DAT.
