Toolbars and Templates

[Word 2002] I thought that toolbar customization stayed in the
template. However, I recently modified the icons on my toolbars and
did not save the template when asked. Nevertheless, the icon
customization "stuck," and is available regardless of which template
I'm using. Why?

The customisation (in this case) has been stored in normal.dot, which is
always available.

I am asked whether I want changes to normal.dot to be saved, and,
unless I do, I always say no. In this case, I also said no, because
I forgot about the toolbar customization I had done. Therefore, it
appears that *that* kind of change to normal.dot is not within the
scope of the option to save or not. Correct? What other types of
changes are within/without the option?

It _is_ within the scope of changes that are asked about.

Okay, but then something here is not making sense. The toolbar
changes stayed, regardless of the template being used. *But*, I had
always said "no" to saving changes in the global template.

Do you have any Add-Ins?

Some of these have the nasty habit of making and saving changes to
normal.dot (and ignoring your request for a prompt). If you made your
changes and one of these operated to save the normal.dot template after your
changes were made, your changes would be saved in addition to the changes
made by the Add-In.
