Toolbars frozen

In an ap using Word 2000, the menu toolbars "freeze" - you
can use the shortcut keys to activate any menu option and
all other functions work but clicking on the toolbar with
the mouse no longer works until exiting from and
restarting Word.

The mouse works for other actvities within the edit
screen, however.

Any ideas??
