top margin in new Word document

using Word 2002 and just a few days ago, when I opened a
new document, the starting point for the cursor is at the
very top of the page totally ignoring the normal template
settings that had been working properly to this point. it
also ignores the normal gutter at the bottom of the page.

Have you checked the Page Setup margin settings? You can also get strange
results like this if the printer settings (which Word reads to determine
paper size and margins) have been scrambled, or if the printer driver is
corrupt, or if the default printer has been changed to something wierd.

You have the "white space" hidden. There's a setting for this on the View
tab of Tools | Options, but you can just hover your mouse over the top of
the page till it turns to a double-headed arrow and you get the ScreenTip
"Show White Space." Left-click and you'll get your header/footer back.
