Tracking a information within in a project

Just a little back ground info – we are a roofing company that keeps track of
amount of work done by the crews by figuring out the number of total hours
worked each day and the number of square feet of roofing membrane that was
installed that day to make sure they are on track with the job estimate.

We are hoping to use project for to track the number of total hours worked
per day by all crew members and the number of squares completed each day. So
if we have 10 guys that worked 9 hrs that day the total number of hours is 90
for the day.

What I’ve had to do at this point is just average out the number of hours
worked and then use the notes field for the number of squares completed.
This won’t work in production.

For the number of squares completed that day I would assume we have to
create a custom field for that. Is there any gotchas that I should look out
for before create a field or anything to take into consideration?

I’m still working on the actual timecard concepts but I’m guessing that for
the task you would put the average number of hours worked per worker here and
then enter the actual number hours worked per worker in the time card. Then
the number of totals hours worked for a project would be based off of the
number of employees that are assigned to the project and their timecards.

If this makes any sense please let me know or if I need to be pointed in a
new direction I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Joe

I think what you want to look at using are Material Resources for this
purpose. What you want is time-phased data and this requires the use of
resources. By creating the material resource "Roofing Membrane" with a usage
of unit of "square feet" you can easily record the the amount "produced," in
this case, along side the daily hourly entries for your resources. Keep in
mind that material resources are designed to track consumption rather than
production, so understand how this will affect your costs if you plan doing
costing in the application. You can then use custom fields to calculate a
KPI indicator for your progress.
