Tracking actuals

Marc Daoust

Is there any way to customize the progress method in the timesheet entry
view by project. (ie) Project A tracks by % Complete, but project B tracks
by Actual work done and work remaining. From what I understand, this may be
done by changing the tracking method in PWA then have the owners of the
project (re) publish the project, and it would have to be done for each
project. This could cause a problem where project owner 1 is tracking by %
complete and re-publishes while the tracking method is set to Actuals
Worked.

Thanks

Marc:

If you set the server to allow Project Managers to select their own tracking
method, then a Project Manager is free to choose on a project by project
basis. Keep in mind that this might require your users to know how to report
time four different ways.

Gary,

Thanks for the assistance on this one, we were able to figure out what we were looking for with the help of various MSP 2003 documentation.

Thanks

Gary,

If Project Managers can choose their own tracking method, is there some
place in Project or Project Server that allows the project manager to select
the reporting method. I have always been confused as to how this can be
done consistently, so that one project is all % complete, and another is
always by entering actuals. I have even found that I could have mixed
methods in the same project based on any changes to the global setting and
the publishing of new tasks. I guess I was looking for some way to
definitively select the reporting option in the project properties or
something like that.

If you change the method mid project the tasks that were published prior
to the change will have the old method while any new tasks will be the
new method. The key is that after you change methods to republish all
your tasks.

Jason:

You can set Project Server to force users to use only one type of tracking
method. The other option is to allow PMs to decide. You set the tracking
method in an individual plan by clicking Tools > Customize > Published
Fields in the Project Client.
