Tracking driving me crazy

T

T

This is a typical scenario:

One task is set to take 2 hours on 10/3/03

But what if the task actually took 1 hour and started 10/4/03 instead? Once
I enter 1 hour, everything will adjust accordingly. This is very annoying:
It will say 50% completed since its basing of the 2h is was supposed to
take, and it says remaning is 1h.

This is particulary annoying in the PWA where it doesn't allow me to change
anything but % completed and remaning, and no matter what I change the
values are all dependent on each other. THis never allows me to enter a
different start date as well as more/less time than it was initially set to.

Help.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

One thing you're certainly learning through your evaluation process is how
complex a task it is to configure Project Server. Project Server supports
three tracking methods. For a brief description and an explanation of these
and how they affect the timesheet view.

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Project Server FAQs/trackingmethods.htm

You can specify the enterprise default and lockdown settings in Project Web
Access from Admin > Customize Microsoft Project Web Access

Microsoft provides downloadable courseware on Project and Project Server at:

Gary,

Thanks for your response. The fact is that I have already setup hte
Enterprise default settings to reflect the tracking method I want. However,
this never set to be true once I go to PWA and look in tasks. No matter what
setting have selected it always remains %work completed/hours remaining. I
have never been successful in being able to edit actual hours/remaining
hours. Actual hours has always remaing yellow and uneditable.

I have also numerous times published the projects from pro to the server and
gone through the tracking wizard where it actually tells me that the only
choice of tracking I have is actual hours/remaining since it has been locked
down by the administrator.

As to the task, I believe I have to check your recommended book.

Thanks

If you've already published plans with one tracking setting and now want to
change the tracking setting, after you do make the changes to the settings
in both Project Server and Project, you must use Collaborate > Republish to
make the changes appear in Project Web Access. Note that any tasks with
progress reported will not convert.

Gary,

Thanks! It makes sense, I was just about to try to create a new project as
settings have changed and see if that one would reflect the correct tracking
settings.

Another question, I am playing with Pro from home and the server is in the
office: I manage to log in correctly and I can see the projects on the
server, but when I try to open them I get this error:

Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 53
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or
access denied.

The server is not behind a firewall. I suspect my Data Sources (ODBC) are
not setup correctly. Not sure if it should be File DSN or System DSN. Do you
know where I can find more information about that.

Thanks for all your help.

While you can make your exposed to the Internet arrangement kind-of
function, you're server is more likely to be hacked than useful. Project Pro
talking to Project Server over the Internet is a very bad idea. To eliminate
the error you're seeing you'll need to change settings on your home machine
using clicfg or LMHOSTS file.

I suggest Terminal Services for your remote access.
