Tracking years of attendance in Excel

I'm trying to keep track of the specific years of attendance of about
2,000 individuals at an event over the last fifty years. I'd like to
keep this data in Excel, but I'm not sure how to track it, other than
adding fifty columns (one for each year) and filling in the cell when
the person was there that year.

Anyone have any better ideas for how to format that?
