Tragedy! Import/Export Failure

T

Teddy

I'm at wit's end here, and I'm hoping someone can help me out:

I'm helping my dad migrate from OE to Outlook 2003. I can get dozens of
folders and hundreds of contacts to come over just fine. Unfortunately, his
inbox itself has over 3,000 messages in it, and I'm having serious issues
with it. I've gotten as many as 2,500 to transfer, but usually it only
imports 69 of them and gives up before finishing the other folders and
contacts.

I've tried pushing (export from OE to Outlook) and pulling (import from OE
from within Outlook). I've tried making a subfolder and moving the 3,000
inbox messages into it. I've tried making 20 subfolders and putting less
than 200 messages in each one (thinking maybe it was the number of e-mails
messing up). I've tried dragging and dropping the OE messages into an
explorer window, but can't import them like that with Outlook. I can't
export in any other format with OE that I could import with Outlook either.

Goin' nuts here. Any other ideas? This is a brand spankin' new computer,
and I'm baffled.

We're the ones who are baffled.
You neglected to post in any discernible detail what you did.
Rather difficult to read your mind.

Wow. Well my deepest apologies for my apparent lack of detail. I'll try to
make my original post a little more "discernable" for you - I certainly had
no intention of requiring anyone to use the Jedi mind trick to help me.

1. I successfully transferred OE files from OE on the old computer to the
new.

2. Attempted to use Outlook 2003's "import" feature from OE. Seemed to
work for all contacts and folders, except for the root inbox, which imported
only 69 of 3300 messages.

3. Deleted all contacts and messages in Outlook in preparation to try again.

4. Attempted to use OE's "export" feature to send contacts and messages to
Outlook 2003. Seemed to work, for all contacts and folders, except for the
root inbox, which imported only 69 of 3300 messages.

5. Repeated Step 3. Then tried a myriad of other variations on 2 and 4.
Got as many as 2500 of the 3300 to import, but never more than that. Thought
maybe I could export from OE in a different format and import into Outlook -
but there's really no other format I can use. I even tried to save the inbox
e-mails as individual *.eml files, but Outlook can't seem to import those
either.

6. I thought maybe Outlook was filtering the inbox e-mails or something
(maybe a junk filter or not importing old e-mails or something), but I can't
see that's it's placed the e-mails in any other location. Besides, the
progress bar during the inbox import/export usually moves relatively slowly
for the first 1/8 or so, then speeds through the rest, which to me means that
its simply skipping the rest of the e-mails.

Boy oh boy. I sure hope THAT'S better, Russ. I thought I was relatively
clear, but I guess not. I appreciate your help.

Oops - forgot two.

7. Repeat step 3. I thought maybe it was an issue with just the inbox
folder itself, since all the subfolders imported fine. So I made a "temp"
subfolder and moved the 3300 messages from the inbox into that and repeated 2
or 4. Still the same problem - only a few would transfer.

8. Repeat step 3. I thought perhaps 3300 was just a ridiculous number for
one folder. So I created around 20 subfolders and distributed the 3300
messages from the inbox into them, so that no one folder had more than 200
messages. Besides, other subfolders with around 200 messages had worked
fine. Tried steps 2 or 4. Still no go; messages were still missing.

Seems like it's not so much the LOCATION or VOLUME of the messages, but the
NATURE of them. Which makes zero sense - there's absolutely no difference
between the e-mails in the inbox and the e-mails in the rest of the folders.
They're just e-mails. Some text, some HTML, some attachments.

<sigh>

.
"...moving the 3,000 inbox messages into it." It seems like
your Dad is somewhat behind on reading his messages and
moving them to folders to categorize them. 90% are probably
not worth saving. I find this in many Computer Club
member's systems. They don't know how to hit the Delete button.

Well maybe he runs an internet business and they're important. But
seriously, you're completely correct. He needs to clean up. But that's not
my call. Still needs to be done. And the principle of the thing: it should
work regardless.

Thanks?

Messages can only be imported from OE when you have created Folders in
Outlook that match precisely the folders you have in OE before you start the
import.
