Traking time on task

actual We are tracking the performance to schedule of various contractors
based on a few metrics, one utilizing time on task. Once a week I will be
meeting with our contractors, and updating actual hours and resources
invested on task. I made a practice schedule and entered some actual hours
and resources on a task. The task originally had (1) resource at 100% for
3/18 – 3/20 (3 days). Creating a scenario of being told from the contractor
the task actually took 2 days, 2 people; starting on 3/18, and ending on
3/19; I went to enter the information accordingly. I entered 8 hours for
each resource on the 18, same for the 19 and entered 3/19 as the actual
finish date. Upon entering the 19th as the finish date, the hours for the
19th changed from 8 to 7 for a total duration of 1.88 days. Why?
I need to have actual time on tasks records, and cannot afford to have the
system changing the actual hours I put in. I did go back and adjust the hours
from 7 to 8, but the duration remained 1.88. My calendar is set for 8 hours
working (7:00 – 12:00, 1:00 – 4:00). None of my tasks are set for effort
driven. I understand the eed to adjust ahead of time by adding/removing
resources (ie. using effort driven tasks), but what about the back end, when
you need to enter actual (work)?

Hi Nick,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Where are you entering the data? If you're using a Usage view, are you
entering the Work in the Actual Work cells rather than the Work cells? Have
you set the project Start to begin at 0700hrs and the same with
Tools/Options.../Calendar tab? Which version of Project are you using (and
SPs)?
