My old desktop is going under fast, so I am buyibg a laptop as a
replacement.
How do I deal with transferring Microsoft Office, contacts etc. and deal
with
Microsoft's security/authentication issue so I don't get cagrged again for
the cost of the programs?
To transfer Office to a new computer, uninstall from old computer and
install on new one. If you have an upgrade version you will need a
qualifying product to install Office on new computer. You do not need to
install the qualifying product {just insert the CD in the drive when asked}.
If you are outside the Microsoft time period for activation {I recall i it
is 120 days since last activation} internet activation will work. If not,
you will be provided with a telephone number to call for activation.
Windows authentication does not apply to installing Office. You likely will
need to go through the authentication process of your Windows OS for
updates.
Uninstalling Office does not delete data files.
You need to backup your data files including *.pst file for Outlook and copy
them to your new computer. Vista has a transfer utility that you may find
useful. Else, just use your current backup copies or copy your data files to
transfer media such as a thumb drive or CD. If you use CD, you will need to
remove the read only attribute added when you copy to CD.
