transparancy

Hi,

I have 2 pictures and the background is white (JPEG).
Using the tool 'SET Transparant Color'works o.k, but making a PDF after that
is taking much longer then normal.
Question:
is there another way to make pictures transparant to avoid this?
Publisher 2003 used, no service pack yet.
