I have had similar problems with what you are dealing with as well.
Initially, I thought it was Xerox's fault as well, but then the problems
occured in all of my printing capabilities, including HPs, Epsons, and PDFs.
It's causing a considerable headache for me.
I even tried Steve's suggestion, but I can't always "select the image behind
it" as it is my background image...
Furthermore, my problem is not just with PNGs. We decided to leave PNGs
alone and tried using the new tranparency slider tool in PPT (2003) to create
some of the effects that I am looking for... that too, doesn't print properly.
The only other thing I have done to circumvent this problem (although,
again, adds a lot of time) is to create print and view versions.
I do a high resolution sceenshot of the slide at full slide view mode, then
bring it into Photoshop individually and make new PNGs to bring back into a
blank PPT to create a print version. It's a PAIN in the A** but it is a time
consuming solution.
If you ever come across a way to make transparent/gradiented png print
properly, PLEASE let me know as well!!!

I'm lucky Xerox/Microsoft doesn't charge me for my detective work! this
printer has several "hotfixes" which only work part way. Xerox likes to
pretend any new examples of the same problem are a different thing altogether
and implies its microsoft's fault .. I've an old and growing file of this
printer! it's cost much more in lost productions & extra paper and ink (boy
does it consume!) than's it cost to buy

Ah, good detective work. It indeed sounds like an issue with the phaser.
Maybe see if there are updated drivers available for it.

the images print fine from any of image viewers I have on my pc -- from
photoshop on down to the kodak image viewer that came with the pc .. I'm
starting to wonder if this is not yet another "problem" with our laser color
printer (a Xerox phaser 6250) .... when I print a sample slide on our old
dinky HP photosmart ink jet .... the trasparent image comes out fine
(although its not great quality print)
oh well....

Does it work if you print it individually(as in you open the image and print
it) rather than putting the images into powerpoint for printing?

am trying to use transparent images
I've created png and jpg images in photshop that have 25-50% opacity of the
original ...
they are inserted onto a slide and look great .. the kind of watermarked
image I was looking for ...
HOWEVER, THEY DON'T PRINT OUT!
any idea why? is there a work around? other than saving the slide as an
image and than bringing that image back as a background ?!
