Trouble opening Excel Files without first opening application?

Please can someone offer me a suggestion to my problem?
Recently - I am unable to open a saved excel file without first opening the
excel application - I wonder if there is a simple solution that will help
without having to re-install excel?
If i try to open the saved excel file i get an error message 'Cannot find
the file specified'
(Though, as mentioned) if i first open excel application and file/open there
is no problem?)
I would appreciate any advice....
