Trouble removing projects from resource pool

I seem to have trouble removing projects from the resource pool.
I have a project which has been put on hold recently - so need to remove so
that resource allocation can be looked at for remaining projects.

I have opened the project in question and changed to use its own resources.
I open my Master Plan - remove project and sub-tasks from this.
I go into the resource pool and break link to the project.
Save everything.

When I open the master plan again - resource pool connects to the old
project - even though it does not appear in the master plan.
Any ideas?

I have resolved this myself now - just for the record I will post the answer.
It was because normally the "resource pool" is in read only - it still
allows you to
"break link" to projects. It is obvious now that it didn't actually save
anything because its in read-only. You have to open the resource pool in
update mode locking it from other users while you break the link.
