Trouble sending mails via VPN-client in Outlook 2000

When I try to send emails on a VPN-client using outlook, I get the error:
“Network Problems Are Preventing Connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server
Computerâ€.
I have found out that it is only if the textbox of the mail is not empty.
I can send mails only with a subject or with a subject and attachments.
Is it an outlook, exchange or dsl problem ?
I am using XP and outlook2000 on the VPN-client and exchange2000 server.

Any ideas ?
