Trouble transferring outlook addresses to new computer

Joanne Sears

I have used MS Outlook for many years, but every time I
get a new computer I have the same (with variations)
difficulty transferring my Outlook Contacts files to the
new Outlook, bought and installed on the new computer.

Last time it took over a week, and the help of two
different professionals. This time it's still in the
first week, my old computer is still here and has my
address files on it. I have tried to back up the file
(after difficulty even locating them on the computer) but
a message says "part of the file is locked" and none of
it can be copied to a disk. (I thought I had
successfully copied a backup copy to a small floppy, but
it turns out all that copied was a small file, a
shortcut). Then I tried to make a .pst file, hoping I
could export it that way.

The export system does not offer the option of exporting
addresses from one Outlook Contacts File to another on
the menu.

There IS a system, there must be a system, but I can't
figure it out. It is clouded in mystery. Please, please
please can you help? I'm helpless without my contacts.
I have looked at your websites, and all the self help I
can find, but nothing that I have yet found talks about
this procedure or lists it in a menu or an index.

Thanks,

Joanne Sears

.
Go to www.microsoft.com/outlook, in left column click
on "assistance", under "Browse Assistance" click
on "Contacts", then click on "Move contact to another
computer." Follow directions and read the "how"
and "tips." This worked for me. Good Luck.

1) Close Outlook on source computer.
2) Copy PST (usually located in the hidden folder %USERPROFILE%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook) to some transfer media. Many
people use CDR or CDRW.
3) Place the transfer media into the destination computer
4) Copy PST to some folder on the destination hard drive.
5) Remove Read-Only attribute from PST (right-click, choose Properties)
6) Configure Outlook, if not already done, on destination PC.
7) In Outlook, click File>Open>Outlook Data File, browse to the PST, select
it, and click OK.
8) There are all your items. Either make the transferred PST your default
delivery location, move the items in it (like your Contacts) to your current
delivery location folders, or just leave them where they are and use them
there.
