Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

Hi there,

I got an Mac Pro with Mac OS X Server 10.5.6 installed. This is my OpenDirectory Master with network homes configured. The clients come mostly with Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Microsoft Office 2008. If i try to open an attachment in Entourage by double clicking it i randomly get the following error message:

"Could not open attachment. Permission to access this file was denied."

I already read a topic about this problem in here. Does anyone know what to do?

Why are you running Entourage on a server that other folks are using?
That's a very bad practice.

Run Disk Utility found in /Applications/Utilities and repair
permissions. You may not have the correct read/write permissions for
some temp directories.

Also, try copying the "Microsoft User Data" folder found in your
~/Documents folder to another machine with the same version of
Entourage. See if it will open there.

Finally, make sure you have downloaded the entire message. If you see
"Get Entire Message" in a yellow bar at the top of the message then you
need to click it to get the entire message before you'll be able to open
the attachment.

Hope this helps!

Have you ever heard of OpenDirectory on a Mac OS X Server? Thats a directory service you can compare it to ActiveDirectory from Microsoft. Entourage is installed locally on each clients harddrive. The username and password as well as the home directory are stored on the server. Locally everything works fine. But if the home directory is on a network share as it is with an OpenDirectory Server i have this issue when you try to open attachments by double klicking it. The thing is this happens randomly. One attachment opens by double klicking it another not.

Any other ideas?

OK, now I think I understand you. My first reading of your message came
across as you yourself running Entourage on your server itself. Now, I'm
understanding that you're referring to your users running Entourage with
their home folders on the server.

When attachments are double-clicked, they are saved to this location:

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Saved Attachments

Possibly, the files are in the middle of syncing and getting locked by
this process. Are your users set to constantly sync their home folders
or are they syncing at logout? I wouldn't expect this problem if syncing
only at logout.

Size of the attachments may be a factor too. Have you notice a
correlation between size and inability to open attachments? Are your
users making sure they have the entire message downloaded? Have them
look for "Get Entire Message" at the top of a problem message to make
sure they have received the full attachment before opening.

Hope this helps!

No syncing. The home directory is a mounted network share. I did check the privleges of the Microsoft User Data folder. Everythings fine here. Some attachments can be opened by double click others not. This issue occurs more ofen if you have a big Database file. Can i change the location of the Microsoft User Data folder?

I wish I were more familiar with folder redirection and use
network-based home folders.

The only workaround we have for moving the MUD is to simply move it and
put an alias back in its place.
