Trouble with OL 02 & GMAIL IMAP - 'too many simultaneous connectio

P

p-daddy

I'm having a really tough time finding answers/help for the solution on this,
or even on how to configure things correctly.

I have 3 email accts - 1 local ISP POP3, 1 Gmail personal IMAP, 1 Google
Apps work IMAP. Home PC is running Outlook 2002 SP3.

FIRST QUESTION - (just to be sure) IMAP is what I need, yes?
[ I want to access my Gmail & work accts from multiple locations (web
interface is fine for most), but I also want to download & store the complete
emails for these on my home PC while keeping them sync'd (if I delete one via
web, it deletes at home) ]

SECOND QUESTION - (just to be sure) Can someone tell me if Outlook 2002
(SP3) is a good fit for this? That is what I have, but I could upgrade to
something newer or go <gasp> with T-bird if that would solve my problems...

THIRD QUESTION - (THE REAL ISSUE) I'm getting a 'Too many simultaneous
connections' message and my Send/Rec is hanging up. Some mail eventually
gets thru, so my mail server settings are correct AFAIK. I setup a separate
Send/Rec group for each email acct to help isolate things, and I've been
Send/Rec separately by going to Tools > Send/Rec > (the acct), but both of my
IMAP accts have the same trouble.

It appears to me that Outlook is trying to establish a 'connection' for each
of my IMAP folders. For example, when I Send/Rec on my personal (Gmail)
acct, it says 'x of 65 tasks completed' (x being 1 or 3 or 17...hangs in
different places). And the tasks listed are each of my 65 or so stored mail
folders plus the inbox, etc. (Gmail's website says they only allow 10
connections, but only reference this as a potential problem for when you
might leave two or more email clients connected at the same time...?)

What I'm not sure of is if I correctly setup or configured my IMAP folders.
[ Here is what I did...I had a good number of saved emails (several hundred
total in 60 folders, plus 3-4 folders of 1000 each). When I setup my IMAP
Gmail acct, I just moved each of the folders up to it, under the hierarchy
that is set by Outlook, putting them at the same level as my new IMAP inbox.
It seemed to work fine, but I did not go thru the Subscribe to folders dialog
box stuff. ]

Here is one thing confusing me & may be the problem... When I setup my
Send/Rec groups, I gave them names, and those names appear in the Tools >
Send/Rec submenu, listed as #5-#7 (#4 is All accts which was default & which
I disabled everything in for troubleshooting). #1-#3 are apparently my three
email accts that Outlook added to this menu. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
MY GMAIL ACCT (#2, that Outlook added to the list automatically) AND THE
SEND/REC GROUP I SETUP (#6, for that same Gmail acct)? I've noticed this
difference...

When I goto #2 to Send/Rec, it only lists 3 tasks (Sending, Checking Inbox
for new mail, Checking Subscribed Folders for new mail) AND NEVER HANGS...but
it doesn't seem to sync like I want...I don't think it is following the
settings I have for my folders to 'download complete messages'...(but again
I'm not sure I set that up right). HOWEVER, when I Send/Rec #6 (same acct,
but this time using my Send/Rec group I setup), IT HANGS, and lists the 65
tasks (listing each folder as a separate task). THIS IS MY PROBLEM, CAN
ANYONE PLEASE HELP?!?!

AND, if nothing else, can someone direct me to (or tell me) a comprehensive,
step-by-step instruction on how to setup my IMAP folders for proper download?
(I've read everything in HELP and several Knowledge base articles...either
too basic or don't discuss my exact setup).

THANKS VERY MUCH! for your help, (you deserve a medal just for making it to
the end of this email!)

There isn't anything special to setup - just add the acct and go. Outlook
2002 is not the best imap client though and tries to open connections to all
the folders. Google doesn't help as it creates folder for each label at the
inbox level plus a main folder set, so you have more folders syncing than
you really need.

Well, that's the problem then, thanks.

Is there a newer version of Outlook that will handle IMAP better? (meaning
WITHOUT opening a connection for each folder...how does 2003 handle this? or
2007?)

[ OR offhand does anyone know if T-bird opens connections for each? ]
