Trouble with Outline Numbering

B

Bob

I am trying to number an outline in the following manner (with no indents,
but using styles):

1.0 Heading 1 text
1.1 Heading 2 text
1.1.1 Heading 3 text
2.0 Heading 1 text
2.1 Heading 2 text
2.1.1 Heading 3 text

but I am ending up with:

1.0 Heading 1 text
1.1 Heading 2 text
1.1.1 Heading 3 text
2.0 Heading 1 text
1.2 Heading 2 text
1.1.2 Heading 3 text

Could someone please tell me how to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

It seems as if the entries in the Number Format box (in the Customize
Outline Numbered list dialog box) have been reversed for level two and
three numbering, so that the "Previous level number" is in fact
displayed *after* the current level number. Since you can't tell the
difference between the various numbers (by looking at them), you'd
better clear the contents of the box and reinsert it.

If you are using styles to set up numbering, which is recommended,
start at the top-level style when modifying, and then, in the Modify
Style dialog box, choose Format | Numbering, click the Customize
button. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

If you are not using styles, place the insertion point in the first
paragraph which has a level one number applied, and then access level
two and three via Format | Bullets and Numbering, Outline Numbered
tab, Customize button.
