troubleshoot install office 2000 disc 2 on XP system

I'm running XP Home Edition and use Word, Excel and Access from Office 2000.
I recently tried to install more of Office 2000 from disc 2. I overcame my
first error message with help from this site by replacing the setup.exe file.
(I have disc 2 copied to both my hard drive and a new RW CD with the new
setup file. It cleared up my error message but now I have a new one. It is:
"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application
vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package".

I found that error message on a help site and studied the fixes. The
information is old and does not include the XP OS in the solutions. It also
bothers me that solutions are stated as being for Office 2000 Standard and I
have Premium. I tried some of the fix ideas but no help.

I have had this XP system for about 8 months and have reinstalled Office
2000 disc 1 two or three times with no trouble. So I know that works. It is
also working using the old setup.exe file. And, I did install disc 2
originally on Windows 98 (probably 3 or 4 years ago). Also, I can read it. So
it's not damaged.

Is this enough info for someone to help me start troubleshooting? Thank you.

Is this the way you have always added Office components?.. I have never
owned Office 2000, but my guess is that one starts with CD 1 which then
calls for CD2 if stuff is needed from that location..

Disk 2 is Publisher and clipart. I had some grief with Publisher 2000 after I
installed 2003, the cleanup utility solved the issue. It doesn't delete any data.

As stated, I never had Office 2000, as I preferred WordPerfect 7 at the
time.. thanks for the info

Mike, the first time I installed Office 2000 I successfully installed both
Disc 1 (Word / Excel / Access) and Disc 2 (Publisher) on a Windows 98 system.
I suspect that I was prompted for Disc 2 as an option but I’m not certain.
When I trashed that computer and bought my XP system I only installed Disc 1
because I wasn’t using Publisher. This whole mess came about when I decided
that I would like to try to use Publisher. Since my first error was a
Bootstrap matter, I too thought that I might solve it by reinstalling Disc 1
and hoping for a prompt to install Disc 2. I did… it didn’t! No prompt.

Mary, I did the whole Cleanup thing and got nowhere. I was forced to
reinstall my Disc 1 stuff and it worked just fine, as always, EVEN THOUGH it
runs with the old BAD SETUP EXECUTE program. My original Disc 2 went back to
the Bootstrapper error. My substitute Disc 2 install files, which have the
upgraded setup file, give me the same error that we are trying to overcome.

Thank you both for trying.
