troubleshoot slide with sound hanging

B

Bob

Slide has .mid file starting a series of 2 slides. Slide has several bullets
transistioning into master. Play slide works, when the whole program is run,
the slide hangs (34 of 53). Program was packaged for playing on CD, and did
work. Files copied to different machine, and it hangs.

E

Echo S

Sorry, I can't understand from your description how your file is actually
set up and if your problem is with sound hanging when you run the whole show
on the computer you created it on or if the problem is after you package for
CD (or did you use Pack and Go?) and try to play on a different computer or
what. You said that the program was packaged "and did work." Did work where?
And does that mean that the CD worked, or just that the original PPT file
worked?

Where are these MIDI files? I see you said "starting a series of 2 slides,"
but that doesn't tell me much. Do you mean that the MID was inserted on
slide 34 and is supposed to transition to slide 35?

Please expand. You haven't yet received any responses, and I suspect that's
because others don't quite understand your setup either.

B

Bob

Sound or animation hangs on slide 34. Overall 53 slides, with 10 midi files,
and 3 wav files inserted (not linked) into various slides. Slide 34 has 4
text objects that transistion in every 5 seconds. Midi file has about 5-6
seconds of blank time, before music plays. The music is set to play over two
slides, 34 & 35. Other midi's play across 10 slides or less.

The program worked, on machine one. Used Pack & Go for CD. Copied to CD.
Played successfully from CD, and copied to laptop harddrive, both copies
worked at least a dozen times, as it was played and copied to VHS through
adapter from PC to TV. Program has worked from original file folder on
desktop. Worked in file folder on desktop created by Pack & Go. Worked on
CD copied from desktop. Worked on file folder copied to laptop.

A few minor spelling changes were made on the laptop version. The new PPT
program was copied back from laptop new version to desktop hard drive (no CD
writer on laptop).

All midi and wav files are the same on desktop. Now, both version one, and
revised version copied from laptop to desktop, "hang" on slide 34. The
program plays 34 slides, and either the animation, or the midi file send the
desktop into a stall. No amount of time will allow it to fix itself. The
slide and midi file works when editing the program, old and new versions.

All files, created in the Pack and Go are in one folder, or where on one CD.

I have tried splitting the slide, into text objects, and midi object. It
works when editing and playing the 3 slides. Pack & Go program hangs on
slide 34...

Is this enough clarification?

Yes, that's fantastic info, Bob. Thank you!

Since the files play on all the systems after unpacking and copying, etc.,
your links seem to be intact. That's a good thing.

This makes me wonder which version of PPT is on the laptop and which version
the original file was created with. What I'm wondering is if the sound
animation settings have gotten mucked up -- different versions of PPT handle
the sound animations differently, so...

Can you make the minor spelling changes to the original file and repack and
move?

Yes, changes made using desktop version.
Saved.
Pack & Go, to new file folder.
Copied to CD.
Both CD and new file folder version lock and die at slide 34.

Added new slide 34, with only midi file. The sound track has about 8
seconds of dead time until music initiates. New 34 has 3 second delay before
moving on to 35, which contains only 4 text transistion boxes.

Play works from slide 33+.
Play works when editing 34.
Sometimes (1in4 maybe) the program works.
Pack & Go to new file folder, and copy to CD, slide 34 hangs. Later in
program, text transistion works about half the time, or fade in is jerky.

Copying just slide 34-36, to "new" program, works.

Playing just the midi file works.

All background programs on desktop are turned off. Machine is P4, 1Gb
memory. Have also tried running PPT right after re-start of desktop.

I have tried deleting the midi file, and then re-inserting. Makes me miss
the old 35mm slide days...

Dang, that's frustrating.

The only thing I know to do is reinsert all the sounds in the file. I know
that some versions of PPT -- especially 2002, it seemed to me, anyway --
would do some strange things with sound files. Often, stripping out all the
sounds and reinserting would take care of the issues.

Actually, hang on. I think I have another question...

Copied to CD.

Does the file hang before the Pack and Go?

What version of PPT are you making the changes in?

The odd thing here is that it works sometimes and also that it *did* work
but doesn't work well/reliably after making minor changes to the file.

Hm. Do you have Allow Fast Saves turned on in Tools/Options? If so, turn it
off, resave, and see if maybe that resolves it. Long shot, but won't hurt to
try.

PowerPoint 2003, Professional, SP1
Fast Save was on.
Desktop version worked once, after 3 tries. So I used Pack & Go. CD and

Turned Fast Save off, re-saved. Slide 34 failed again.

PPT 2003 doesn't have a Pack and Go option. It does have Package for CD.
Now, you probably are saying Pack and Go out of habit from using that
feature in previous versions. (I know I do it all the time!) No problem --
just wanting to make sure we are on the same page, especially since Pack and
Go will force use of the old 97 PPT Viewer and that Viewer doesn't work the
same way or support the same animations that the 2003 Viewer (used by
Package for CD) does. And since sound play settings are related to the
animation play settings...

One other odd question -- could this be a file path length thing? If you put
the folder with the presentations and sound on your C drive proper, does
slide 34 work then?

What kind of sound play settings do you have set? One of the versions of PPT
doesn't seem to like it if you try to start some sounds seconds into the
sound. In other words, if you don't start playing the sound at 00:00, it
will hang. That doesn't sound like the problem here, but hey, doesn't hurt
to ask.

What happens if you take all the animations off of slides 34 and 35 and
remove the slide transition effect? Oh, what kind of transition time do you
have set for slides 34 and 35?

That's good info, actually. Can you check to see if you have anything
running in the background? Any scheduled processes that may be kicking in?
(Harddrive power settings on the laptop, maybe? Antivirus programs, that
kind of thing?) Also, in PPT go to Tools/Options and turn off (deselect)
"save autorecover info every XX minutes" on the Save tab.

And can you also see if clearing out your Temporary Internet Files folder
and deleting any *.TMP files on the system helps?

I'd actually probably do this stuff with background processes before doing
the stuff (changing the sound settings, trying the file from the C drive,
etc.) I suggested earlier in this post.

Fast Save was on.
Desktop version worked once, after 3 tries. So I used Pack & Go. CD and
new file folder version failed.

Turned Fast Save off, re-saved. Slide 34 failed again.

Yes, changes made using desktop version.
Saved.
Pack & Go, to new file folder.
Copied to CD.
Both CD and new file folder version lock and die at slide 34.

Long shot, but won't hurt to
try.

:

Is this enough clarification?

Yes, that's fantastic info, Bob. Thank you!

Since the files play on all the systems after unpacking and copying, etc.,
your links seem to be intact. That's a good thing.

A few minor spelling changes were made on the laptop version. The
new
PPT
program was copied back from laptop new version to desktop hard
drive
(no
CD
writer on laptop).

All midi and wav files are the same on desktop. Now, both version one,
and
revised version copied from laptop to desktop, "hang" on slide 34.

This makes me wonder which version of PPT is on the laptop and which version
the original file was created with. What I'm wondering is if the sound
animation settings have gotten mucked up -- different versions of
PPT
handle
the sound animations differently, so...

Can you make the minor spelling changes to the original file and
repack
and
move?

Sound or animation hangs on slide 34. Overall 53 slides, with 10 midi
files,
and 3 wav files inserted (not linked) into various slides. Slide
34
has 4
text objects that transistion in every 5 seconds. Midi file has
about
5-6
seconds of blank time, before music plays. The music is set to
play
over
two
slides, 34 & 35. Other midi's play across 10 slides or less.

The program worked, on machine one. Used Pack & Go for CD.
Copied to
CD.
Played successfully from CD, and copied to laptop harddrive, both copies
worked at least a dozen times, as it was played and copied to VHS through
adapter from PC to TV. Program has worked from original file
folder
on
desktop. Worked in file folder on desktop created by Pack & Go. Worked
on
CD copied from desktop. Worked on file folder copied to laptop.

A few minor spelling changes were made on the laptop version. The
new
PPT
program was copied back from laptop new version to desktop hard
drive
(no
CD
writer on laptop).

All midi and wav files are the same on desktop. Now, both version one,
and
revised version copied from laptop to desktop, "hang" on slide 34. The
program plays 34 slides, and either the animation, or the midi
file
send
the
desktop into a stall. No amount of time will allow it to fix
itself.
The
slide and midi file works when editing the program, old and new versions.

All files, created in the Pack and Go are in one folder, or where
on
one
CD.

I have tried splitting the slide, into text objects, and midi
object.
It
works when editing and playing the 3 slides. Pack & Go program
hangs
on
slide 34...

Is this enough clarification?

Sorry, I can't understand from your description how your file is
actually
set up and if your problem is with sound hanging when you run
the
whole
show
on the computer you created it on or if the problem is after you package
for
CD (or did you use Pack and Go?) and try to play on a different computer
or
what. You said that the program was packaged "and did work." Did work
where?
And does that mean that the CD worked, or just that the original PPT
file
worked?

Where are these MIDI files? I see you said "starting a series of 2
slides,"
but that doesn't tell me much. Do you mean that the MID was
inserted
on
slide 34 and is supposed to transition to slide 35?

Please expand. You haven't yet received any responses, and I suspect
that's
because others don't quite understand your setup either.

Actually, in addition to the autorecover thing, I'd definitely disable the
antivirus program on the system and see how that affects things. It may be
that it's scanning because there's an MIDI playing or something, and when
the A/V kicks in, it stalls the actual show...

Note that disabling the A/V might not be enough. Some A/V products (Norton,
for instance) have Office plug-ins that you'll need to disable in addition.
See Norton Anti-Virus and Office
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm for more information on that.

Yes, using PPT 2003, Package for CD.
That packaged PPTView 2003, verson 11.0.5703.0, both on desktop and laptop
folder.

creating new file folder on C:/ ~failed

All midi and wav files start at 00:00, no delays.

Slide34
Start midi playing for 3 slides, exit after 3 sec

Slide35
One text box, with 4 1st level paragraph transistions. Slide has 2 second
delay, then 4x5sec paragraphs, slide exit after 23 sec.

Slide 36
One text box, with 3 1st level paragraph transistions. All play for 5
seconds, with variable delays starting, slide exit after 22 sec.

All background functions are OFF.
Machine re-started, so no memory fragmentation that I can detect.

PPT Tools/Options deselected AutoSave after 10 minutes. ~failed

NAV 2004, disabled ~failed.

NAV miscellaneous options, Office Plug-In disabled. ~failed.

Attempt at regsvr32 /u "officeav.dll" got LoadLibrary return error code
0x8002801C complete path was specified, using above from your link failed as
"not found".

All temporary internet and other files deleted. ~failed.

I have not "rebuilt" the program, deleting all sound, and re-installing. I
also have not tried sacrificing a virgin sheep at midnight, and spreading the
entrails over the keyboard. Both those options will take some time.
