I thought at first it might be a graphics display options on the graphics
system in the new laptop but you say it doesn't print either. Does it make
any difference if you are adding a Gradient, Texture, Pattern or Picture
i.e. do they all fail?
(what version of Word are you running?)

Hi Keith,
First, thank you for your post, this is driving me crazy. I'm wrong I have
not connected this laptop to a printer yet. So I just don't see the fill
effects on my screen. Also, it does not show on the screen when I try the
Gradiant, Texture, or Patterns tabs. I am using office professional edition
2003 and am working in word.

In Windows, click on Start | Control Panel | Accessibility Options |
Display tab | uncheck the "Use high contrast" box | OK.

THANK YOU soooo much, I just spent all day trying to fix that problem, and I
was working on another problem. When I unchecked the high contrast tab, it
fixed both things. Thank you, Denise

I just got back from a day away to see you have solved Denise's problem.
Thanks, especially as I would never have got to it. Is that a known problem
with laptops?

No, it's a known problem, period.

I have the same problem as Denise. I cannot see the texture fill in Normal
view, but it displays in the slideshow.

I also tried your suggestion below but my "Use High Contrast box" is already
unchecked.

Anyone have any other suggestion?

Thanks in advance

Drawing objects/effects Never display in Normal view. The following from
Word Help:

"The graphic you want to see may be a drawing object - such as a text box,
an AutoShape, clip art, or WordArt. Drawing objects are not visible in
normal view (normal view: A view that shows text formatting and a simplified
page layout. Normal view is convenient for most editing and formatting
tasks.). To view, draw, and modify drawing objects, you must be working in
print layout view (print layout view: A view of a document or other object
as it will appear when you print it. For example, items such as headers,
footnotes, columns, and text boxes appear in their actual positions.), Web
layout view (Web layout view: A view of a document as it will appear in a
Web browser. For example, the document appears as one long page (without
page breaks) and text and tables wrap to fit in the window.), or print
preview (print preview: A view of a document as it will appear when you
print it.)."
